ENARGAS loves Netmail

Challenge

Spam and viruses represented a serious IT security problem that ENARGAS needed to address. To prevent the distribution of spam and viruses, ENARGAS was using a Trend Micro appliance, but the product was unable to meet the organization's needs on several levels. The anti-spam and anti-malware capabilities were weak, and there was no content filtering engine to prevent inappropriate email from reaching its customers.

Solution

As soon as the solution was deployed, the numerous email security problems they were facing disappeared. Using Netmail’s policy-based content filtering capabilities, the IT Team at ENARGAS was able to implement comprehensive content filtering policies to prevent offensive or abusive email messages from circulating throughout their email and collaboration system.

Results

The switch to Netmail has been advantageous for customers, too. In fact, since the solution was deployed, virtually no one has complained about receiving spam in their mailbox, whereas prior to implementing Netmail the proliferation of spam was a regular complaint. Another benefit that the IT staff is realizing with the deployment of Netmail is its deployment as a virtual appliance which translates into a significant savings on hardware costs.

Overview

ENARGAS trusted Novell's recommendation and replaced their existing anti-spam product with Netmail Secure. As soon as the solution was deployed, the numerous email security problems the organization were facing disappeared, and offensive or abusive messages were prevented from circulating through their GroupWise email and collaboration system for good.

Business Challenge

Ente Nacional Regulador del Gas (ENARGAS) is the Argentine government agency that oversees, inspects, and regulates various aspects of natural gas distribution in the country, including environmental protection, technical and commercial procedures, service quality, and compressed natural gas (CNG). It is also the entity that approves the rates of service providers and licenses distributors and vendors of natural gas in Argentina.

For years, ENARGAS has relied on Novell technology for the collaboration needs of its 500+ employees. Marcos Sayoni, IT Manager at ENARGAS, explains the central role that email plays at the agency, "Email is a mission-critical business application for us. As a regulating entity we need to be able to communicate with the public and the companies that we oversee. We rely on email to manage public complaints regarding the services provided by private companies. In addition, we have a special Customer Service unit that also uses email to reach our customers. Finally, email is the channel through which ENARGAS interacts with other government agencies."

Similar to other government institutions, spam and viruses represent a serious IT security problem that ENARGAS needed to address. To prevent the distribution of spam and viruses, ENARGAS was using a Trend Micro appliance. However the product was unable to meet the organization's needs on several levels. The anti-spam and anti-malware capabilities were weak. Moreover, there was no content filtering engine to prevent inappropriate, abusive or profane email messages from reaching its customers. In addition, the organization was experiencing critical CPU-utilization issues with the appliance which translated into increased overhead for the IT staff as they were required to constantly monitor the product.

Critical Requirements

  • Eliminate the distribution of spam and viruses
  • Prevent inappropriate, profane or abusive email messages from circulating
  • Reduce hardware costs and IT overhead.

Securing Email Communications

It became increasingly clear to the IT Team at ENARGAS that they needed an alternate solution to solve these problems. Alexis Atanasiadis, Country Manager for Novell-Argentina, introduced them to Netmail Secure. As a long-standing Novell partner in the GroupWise space, Netmail and Novell had worked closely together on a number of occasions to provide the most comprehensive solutions to Novell customers.

Based on Novell’s recommendation, ENARGAS decided to replace the old anti-spam product with Netmail Secure. As soon as the solution was deployed, the numerous email security problems they were facing disappeared. Using Netmail Secure’s policy-based content filtering capabilities, the IT Team at ENARGAS was able to implement comprehensive content filtering policies to prevent offensive or abusive email messages from circulating throughout their email and collaboration system.

Another benefit that the IT staff is realizing with the deployment of Netmail Secure is its deployment as a virtual appliance which translates into a significant savings on hardware costs for ENERGAS. Moreover, the time required by the IT staff managing email security has been dramatically reduced. “Our involvement is minimal,” says Sayoni. “We perform periodic updates to our corporate scanning policies, monthly system snapshots of the virtual machine for backup purposes, and occasionally we review the messages blocked by the content filtering engine to make sure our existing corporate policies are adequately blocking inappropriate content.”

The switch to Netmail Secure has been advantageous for customers, too. In fact, since the solution was deployed, virtually no one has complained about receiving spam in their mailbox, whereas prior to implementing Netmail Secure the proliferation of spam was a regular complaint.

Since 2009, ENARGAS has relied on Netmail Secure to ensure that all spam, viruses, and other email-borne threats are prevented from entering their email and collaboration system. "Netmail Secure is extremely efficient and significantly superior to what we had before," confirms Marcos Sayoni. “Now only legitimate email passes into the system.”
