Central Sussex College loves Netmail

Challenge

Central Sussex College decided to migrate its email, calendar appointments, and existing GroupWise archives away from an on-premise Novell GroupWise 2012 system to Exchange hosted on Microsoft’s cloud based Office 365 platform.

Solution

Working in conjunction with Netmail’s Professional Services Team, the college IT team were able to transfer the bulk of all their messaging data to the new Office 365 platform in one “big bang” over the course of a weekend, with the new messaging platform being available for use on the next working day.

Results

The migration project was delivered on time with over 2.3 million mail and calendar items migrated successfully. Following final testing, the college was using the new solution by late morning on the first business day.

Overview

Central Sussex College is a college of further education in West Sussex. It has campuses across West Sussex and offers courses ranging from Sixth form and Adult education to undergraduate courses through partnerships with universities. Central Sussex College was formed in August 2005 from a merger of Crawley College and Haywards Heath College.

Business Challenge

Central Sussex College decided to migrate its email system away from an on-premise Novell GroupWise 2012 system to Exchange hosted on Microsoft’s cloud based Office 365 platform. It was imperative that the college would be able to migrate all staff email, calendar appointments and existing GroupWise archives to the new solution in one “big bang” over the course of a weekend, with the new messaging platform being available for use on the next working day.

Having investigated a number of different solutions, the college settled on Netmail's migration solution after finding it to be the most competitively priced and the company themselves to be the most responsive and helpful during the evaluation and planning stages of the project.

Solution

Working in conjunction with Netmail’s Professional Services team, the college's IT team were able to transfer the bulk of all their messaging data to the new Office 365 platform well before the go-live date. This gave the IT team the opportunity to evaluate the quality of the transferred data and address any concerns or problems before the go-live date.

“On the weekend before the switch over, we simply needed to run a differential transfer job that injected any remaining new emails into the staff accounts in O365,” according to Luke Middleton, IT Systems Manager at Central Sussex College.

Over the following weeks, the college used the Netmail solution to convert GroupWise Archives into an Exchange readable format (PST) and inject them directly back in to staff email accounts using Office 365’s built-in import tool.

Results
